I think you are getting the basic basic. I wouldn’t do it if you have been playing for a year. This is more for beginners and parents who want to buy for their kids not knowing if they will keep it up. These days you can get a pretty good quality electric guitar from 2 to 4 hundred. You can do a litte better if you go used. Look for names like ibanez, ephiphone (by Gibson) they have all the regular Gibson models like Les Paul and SG. They even have a tonne of variety in special models, standard, classic etc. Also a pretty wide range of pick up configuations. If you like humbuckers this is the way to go. If you like single coil pickups look at squier which is made by Fender. They also have a wide range as does ibanez. There are actually a lot of good new names in this price range. I picked up a pretty good ibanez for a little over two hundred a few years back and saw a similar model for 170.00 recently. You can get squires for 150 up to 350-400 and epiphone from about 200 up to 500. So I would say with about 500 and some shrewd shopping and bargaining you get set yourself up with a decent guitar and and adequate amp. These ones in the gig back are not great. It is basically a practice amp which is fine but sound isn’t there. The first practice amp I bought was a “Roland Cube“. It is a tube amp which is what you want. This one seriously cranks out like it’s a forty watt. Not bad at all from a pratice amp and it even has a few effects. This one comes in a 80.00 to 120.00 depending and you can get more powerful sizes.
Do your homework. I am quoting store prices. Once you know what you want you can go online and see there is even more choice for the money. I love shopping for guitars even when I am not buying and it can be fun if you learn as much as you can. Don’t be in a hurry because you will find better guitars later at less and kick yourself. You can have a lot of fun for five hundred bucks. You can still have a decent time for 300.00. All better options than what you are thinking about. The longer it takes to find the best you can you should have a few more bucks saved up. Spend what you have to to get what you really want. If it takes a little longer so what? Ulimately you are looking for one that fits in your hands like it was made for you and sounds like a lover you knew in a different life. Good things come to those who wait. In the mean time shop and learn and dream big. Go to your local music store and try out the one you really want. You won’t be buying so price doesn’t matter. You just have to see what it feels like to try out a machine. I do it sometimes just to try new stuff. It is a great experience. Don’t sell yourself short. When the time comes if you are going a little more high end you can bargain a little. The more expensive the guitar the better you can do. The ones I mentioned above don’t have the greatest resale so going into the 700.00 up range is actually better on all fronts. It really is up to what your after. The choice is dazzling and the longer you wait an more you learn the more dazzling it gets. Happy hunting.
